The University of Washington (UW) located in Seattle, invites applications for an experienced laboratory animal veterinarian to serve as a Senior Clinical Veterinarian and Director of Surgical Training (100% FTE). A percentage of this appointment may also be used to pursue research, teaching/mentoring and other scholarly activities including grant writing.
As Senior Clinical Veterinarian, the successful applicant will serve as a member of a veterinary medical team which is responsible for the clinical care of a wide variety of species including mice, rats, pigs, rabbits and others. Daily tasks include appropriate application of clinical diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to clinical cases; interacting with and providing guidance to veterinary technicians; mentoring veterinary residents and junior staff; consulting with investigative groups on techniques and approaches, protocol adherence and animal welfare issues; and contributing to the general daily operation and fiscal integrity of the clinical and surgical service.
As Director of Surgical Training, the successful applicant will work with members of the UW’s Animal Use Training Programs to provide surgical training to all investigators performing survival surgery. This includes the provision of training in anesthetic administration and monitoring, aseptic technique, basic surgical skills including proper use of surgical instruments, methods of surgical closure, fluid and temperature management, and post-operative care. In addition, this position updates current training classes and plans new training classes to efficiently meet the training requirements of UW researchers.

The DCM has a faculty of 38 primary, adjunct, and affiliate veterinarians and scientists who have diverse training and expertise in laboratory animal biology and medicine, veterinary pathology, surgery, internal medicine, and aquatics. DCM Faculty research interests are broad and include specific expertise in developmental immunology, inflammatory lung disease, innate immunity, inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer, comparative pathology, nutrition/metabolism, embryonic stem cell biology, and aging. The UW is also home to the Washington National Primate Research Center (WNPRC).
