Title: Assistant Professor
Search #: AA2979
The University of Washington seeks to expand its current expertise in hydrology and atmospheric sciences by developing interdisciplinary research and teaching in the area of extreme hydrologic events. In pursuit of this goal, the Departments of Atmospheric Sciences and Civil and Environmental Engineering invite applications or nominations for a full-time (100% FTE) tenure-track faculty position to begin Autumn 2012.
The successful candidate’s research will focus on understanding and quantifying extreme hydrologic events, especially floods and droughts. Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to a) research related to the frequency and severity of floods and droughts; b) hydrometeorological processes that affect or control hydrologic extremes; and c) the relationship between global scale circulations and the local surface processes that affect extreme hydrologic events, including local weather, topography, the water-holding capacity of the underlying soil and vegetation, river basin geometry, and the efficiency of the feedbacks between the atmosphere and the land surface. Research strategies may include application or development of numerical models of the land-atmosphere system and/or the use of new or evolving observing methods to understand and quantify hydrologic extremes. The emphasis of the research may include past, present and future hydrologic extremes.
The Department of the Atmospheric Sciences resides in the College of the Environment (C/Env), which fosters collaborations between the faculty, staff, and students engaged in the study of environmental sciences, engineering, and the human dimensions of environmental challenges. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering resides within the College of Engineering. This position will offer opportunities for interaction with researchers in a wide range of disciplines, including hydrologists, atmospheric scientists, and geologists. It is expected that this position will be established as a joint appointment between the Departments of Atmospheric Sciences and Civil and Environmental Engineering.
A Ph.D. in the physical or environmental sciences or engineering, and a strong record of research in hydrology or hydrometeorology is required. Applicants should supply a curriculum vitae, a 3-5 page statement of experience and interest in research and teaching, and names and contact information of at least three professional references to be sent to the search committee chair. Please submit your application packet either electronically (preferred) or hard copy by mail to the search co-chairs Professors Robert Houze and Dennis Lettenmaier via Debra Wolf at debbie [a] atmos[.]washington[.]edu, Department of Atmospheric Sciences, University of Washington, Box 351640, Seattle, WA 98195-1640. Send queries about the position to either Robert Houze (houze [a] atmos[.]washington[.]edu) or Dennis Lettenmaier (dennisl [a] uw[.]edu).
