The South Asia Studies Programme at the Department of Culture and Society invites applications to the position of teaching assistant professor to start 1 August 2012 or as soon as possible after this date.

South Asia Studies is a language-based area studies programme with special focus on the society, history, culture, politics and language of modern Indian /South Asia (including Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh). The programme is based at the Department of Culture and Society, where its researchers and students engage in close collaboration with other language-based area studies programmes as well as anthropology, the study of religion and history. The department’s research, degree programmes and outreach and knowledge exchange activities are internationally recognised for their excellence.

The programme also collaborates closely with the Contemporary India Study Centre Aarhus (CISCA) which arranges conferences and seminars, attracts guest researchers from India and promotes the exchange of students and instructors.

The atmosphere at the programme is informal, and inspires collaboration in the context of teaching activities as well as research projects and international conferences.

Language teaching is aimed at enabling students to communicate in Hindi and prepares them to make use of written and oral Hindi sources in their academic work. The language is thus viewed as a key to insight into modern India, and language skills are the foundation for the programme’s high standard of research and teaching in this area.

The Department of Culture and Society seeks an innovative and dedicated candidate for this teaching-only position. Native speakers of Hindi are particularly encouraged to apply. The position also requires a Master’s degree or the equivalent as well as documented experience in teaching Hindi as a foreign language. The successful applicant must demonstrate perfect mastery of written and oral Hindi, a prerequisite for teaching on - and coordinating - the Bachelor’s degree programme in South Asia Studies and the Master’s degree programme in Asian Studies.

· an interest in professional development: the successful applicant is expected to follow new methodological developments in foreign language pedagogy with potential relevance to the teaching of Hindi, as well as the pedagogical/didactic development of teaching methods and techniques with relevance to the teaching of Hindi at Aarhus University;

· the ability and desire to initiate and participate in projects related to the development of language teaching and didactics in collaboration with other language-based fields, both at Aarhus University and in an international context;

· that he or she provides support to the associate professor responsible for the area in establishing new contacts to South Asian exchange universities and maintaining existing contact; and

Applicants must possess a Master’s degree in Hindi or equivalent academic qualifications, as well as demonstrating relevant experience in teaching Hindi as a foreign language. Theoretical qualifications in the field of language pedagogy and foreign language teaching will be considered additional assets. Please note that a teaching portfolio may be submitted along with the application, and that the position includes pedagogical support and guidance.

Non-Danish speaking applicants should be aware that the successful applicant will be expected to learn sufficient Danish to participate in the daily business of the department in the course of approximately two years. After a specified transition period, the successful applicant will be expected to master Danish sufficiently well to teach translation between Danish and Hindi and to teach Hindi grammar in Danish.


The Faculty of Humanities refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities (the Appointment Order) under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation .


Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
