Summary Description: The Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health at the Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University is seeking candidates for an assistant or associate professor to lead Departmental programs on global health and human rights. The position includes teaching human rights frameworks and advocacy skills, conducting research, and developing and overseeing service programs that will advance the field of human rights and health. The faculty member will direct a new MPH certificate program in Health and Human Rights. The position will begin in July or September 2012. The HDPFH is a vibrant department of 24 full-time faculty from varied professional backgrounds whose work focuses on domestic and global issues related to sexual/reproductive, adolescent, child and refugee health. Faculty in this largely grant-funded department are engaged in a unique combination of research, teaching and service activities. Specific responsibilities include: --Directing a new MPH certificate on Health and Human Rights, --Teaching contemporary human rights frameworks and their applicability to health, --Articulating advocacy tools that can be utilized in domestic and global settings, --Developing experiential learning opportunities that allow students to develop public health advocacy skills, --Conducting research that will advance the field of health and human rights, --Developing and overseeing service projects that will advance the field of human rights and health, --Collaborating with human rights faculty and programs throughout Columbia University, and --Advising students as a member of the teaching faculty in the Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health. The incumbent will work both individually and collaboratively to secure new sources of funding for research and service programs related to health and human rights. We anticipate that this position will be supported by both tuition and grant funding. The academic level of the appointment will be determined by scholarly research in the field, including first authored peer reviewed publications. This position may be either tenure or non-tenure track. The Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health (HDPFH) addresses a wide range of challenges to population and family health, focusing on reproductive, adolescent, and child health, both settled communities, and in communities that have been displaced as a result of political or environmental emergencies. The Department is committed to public health improvement and works to improve health conditions via research, service, and advocacy in locations in Upper Manhattan, regionally, nationally, and globally.
Minimum Qualifications: Non-tenure: The department focuses on teaching, research and professional experience in population and family health. Tenure: The department requires a strong teaching, research and publication record in addition to the ability to secure independent funding. Successful applicants must have: --A JD or a doctorate in a relevant discipline and/or equivalent human rights/legal experience. --A demonstrated commitment to health and human rights --Expertise in advocacy either in a domestic and/or global context (experience in both settings is preferred) --Comprehensive knowledge of human rights frameworks and the field of human rights --Success obtaining public and private funding --University or comparable teaching experience
Preferred Qualifications: Strong background in research and peer reviewed publications.
