Topic Description
At SoRAD, alcohol and drugs are studied from various social science perspectives. The research is presently divided into three themes. Theme 1: Consumption, problems and norms. The general aim is to study levels and patterns of alcohol and drug use and their association with various related problems and the role of alcohol and drugs in people’s lives. Theme 2: Alcohol and drug policy and its implications includes studies on how substance use is perceived and defined, how policy measures are designed and implemented, and what kinds of concrete and specific effects particular alcohol and drug policies have. Theme 3: Addiction and dependence – societal reactions, treatment and recovery processes. The general aim of research within this theme is to study societal definitions of and reactions to various forms of addiction, and how these have changed with changing societal conditions, to analyze the overall help system from a historical and social-ecological perspective, and to study recovery and change processes that take place outside the help system.

Tobacco, doping, prescription drugs and gambling can also be included in the research area.

Job Description
The successful applicant is primarily expected to take a leading role in alcohol and drug research from sociological perspectives. The job includes teaching and supervision of doctoral students as well as dissemination of research results to the surrounding society. SoRAD is dependent on raising external research funds why it is essential to initiate and participate in the development of new research projects. The tasks can also include overall responsibility for SoRAD’s economy, administration and staff.

Qualification Requirements
Qualified to be employed as a professor is a person who has demonstrated both research and teaching proficiency within the research area. The ability to lead administrative activities and personnel is also required.

Research proficiency should be demonstrated through independent social science research within the research area that exceeds to a significant degree the requirements for qualification as an associate professor, both in terms of quality and in terms of quantity. The planning and leading of research are also to be assigned significance.

The teaching proficiency should be demonstrated through teaching in first cycle education, second cycle education and third cycle education. Assessment of teaching skills should cover the planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching activities and also supervision and examination. The teaching expertise is to be well-documented in a manner which makes it possible to assess the quality of the teaching activities.

The applicant must have the ability to cooperate as well as the ability and suitability otherwise needed to perform duties well.

Bases for assessment
Special and equal emphasis will be paid to teaching and research proficiency, not least through the documented ability to within the research area translate sociological theory into quantitative and/or qualitative research.

Strong emphasis will be paid to
• The ability to lead activities and personnel, as well as administrative skills.
• A documented ability to cooperate well with colleagues and researchers.
• Successfully having applied and received research funds for projects from external sponsors.

Emphasis will be paid to
• Successful research supervision, demonstrated through active guidance of at least one PhD student to a completed degree.
• The ability to collaborate with the surrounding society and to inform about the work of research and development.

The following is a merit
• The completion of at least 7.5 higher education credits in Higher Education in Teaching Theory or having acquired the equivalent knowledge through other means.
• Completed research supervisor training.

Additional information
An applicant who lacks higher education in teaching theory to a value of at least 7.5 higher education credits and who also has been assessed as not possessing corresponding knowledge in another manner must undertake such education during the first two years of employment.

The faculty of social sciences seeks to achieve even distribution between the sexes, therefore women are encouraged to apply for this position.

Understanding Swedish is not a requirement at the time of employment. The applicant should, however, be prepared within a couple of years, to carry out teaching and administration tasks that require knowledge of the Swedish language.
