2011 King’s Awards celebrated

The 2011 King’s Awards reception took place on 21 September in the Weston Room at the Maughan Library. For the fifth year, members of the College community gathered to celebrate the achievements of staff, students and alumni.

Introducing the Awards, the Principal, Professor Rick Trainor, commented: ‘I would like to thank all the winners for their dedication and commitment. This is a time of unprecedented change for the higher education sector and there is no doubt that all universities face challenges ahead with the advent of the new student funding system. King’s is well-positioned to cope with these changes, but ultimately it is the enthusiasm, professionalism and passion of our staff, students and alumni which allow us to adapt while continuing to strive for excellence in everything we do.’

The winners of the categories are:

• Contribution to student experience award - Ryan Wain, President of King’s College London Students’ Union 2009 – 2011

• Excellence & innovation in the arts award - Hannah Crawforth, School of Arts & Humanities

• ICT Award - Michael Escudier, Dental Institute

• Innovation & impact award - Professor Phil Chowienczyk, School of Medicine

• Innovative teacher of the year - Lea Ann Dailey and Professor Jayne Lawrence, both School of Biomedical Sciences

• International collaboration of the year award - Professor Raman Bedi, Dental Institute

• Investigator of the year - Juan Burrone, School of Biomedical Sciences

• Media personality of the year - Professor Madawi Al-Rasheed, School of Arts & Humanities

• Outreach & widening participation award - Bill Edwards, Curator, the Gordon Museum; Gill Sales, Acting Curator, Life Sciences Museum; Julie Keeble, School of Biomedical Sciences

• Principal’s award - Student in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team

• Public engagement award- Mark Miodownik, School of Natural & Mathematical Sciences

• Research project of the year - Professor David Carpenter, School of Arts & Humanities

• Supervisory excellence award - Professor Francesca Happé, Institute of Psychiatry

• Lifetime achievement award - Professor Tak Lee, School of Medicine; Professor Linda Newson, School of Social Science & Public Policy

Alumni Awards were presented to those unable to attend Alumni Weekend earlier in the year. The Helen Hudson awards were given to His Honour John Toulmin CMG QC FKC and Mary Hardy (Spanish & French, 1975).

One of the Lifetime achievement award winners, Professor Linda Newson, who has worked at the College over four decades, commented in her speech: ‘On behalf of Professor Lee and myself, I would like to say how honoured and delighted we are to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. It is very humbling and a tribute to the support and contributions we have received from colleagues, students, family and friends.

‘King’s remains such a centre of creativity and innovation - it has been a privilege for both of us to serve the College; we have many happy memories of King’s and are proud to have been and be part of its history.’
