KTH Joins Australian Low-Carbon Research Centre

The KTH School of Architecture and the Built Environment has agreed to be an international partner in a new Australian research centre aimed at developing tools to reduce urban carbon emissions.

The KTH Division of Building Services Engineering will join the international team working to develop a new Low Carbon Living Cooperative Research Centre in Sydney. On November 22, the Australian government announced the allocation of AUD 28 million (USD 27.5 million) over seven years for the establishment of the Centre. The project is slated to begin next year and will run through 2018.

“There is enormous competition for assignments like this, and we’re very proud to have been selected as a partner”, says Ivo Martinac, director of Building Services Engineering in the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering at KTH.

“This project directly affects KTH students and researchers, because it gives us access to a world-leading research environment. We can create joint research teams and organise workshops and symposia together”, he adds.

Working together in the Low Carbon Living Centre will give researchers from Sweden and Australia new opportunities to visit one another’s universities, and is intended to foster long-term research collaboration, including joint publications.

“The Australian government is making substantial investments in sustainable buildings and even entire cities. This can take the form of alternative energy systems, improved building technology and indoor climate services. Sweden has a lot of valuable knowledge and experience to contribute”, Martinac says.

Swedish researchers are also interested in learning more about Australia’s innovative solutions for protection of water resources.

“We at KTH intend to be as visible as possible. Sweden has a well-deserved reputation as a leader in sustainable solutions. We’re very good at analysing complete systems and at keeping the focus on the user.”
