Melbourne still Australia’s best university

The University of Melbourne is still Australia’s highest ranked university and one of the top 40 institutions in the world, according to the latest Times Higher Education (THE) rankings.

The prestigious rankings of the world’s top 200 universities show Melbourne at 37, maintaining the leading Australian position it achieved in last year’s table.

Melbourne’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Glyn Davis welcomed the news and said it was encouraging in that it reaffirmed the university’s direction in taking on the best of world standards in curricula and research.

"I would like to acknowledge the work of all our teaching staff and researchers who made this outstanding result possible,’’ Professor Davis said.

The Times rankings measure performance in teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.

The result means the University of Melbourne is the highest placed Australian university in three of the four major world rankings.

The University is also Australia’s leader in the Shanghai Jiao Tong and Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan rankings, and second nationally in the QS table.
