Erik Lithander will join the ANU Executive team next year, in the newly created position of Pro Vice-Chancellor (International & Outreach), Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Young announced today.

Professor Young said:

"I am delighted that Lithander has accepted our offer to join the team leading this great university. We look forward to welcoming him to campus when he joins us in June next year.

"Dr Lithander is Director of International Affairs at University College Dublin (UCD) at present, and before that he was Associate Director for International Relations at the University of Auckland.

“Dr Lithander was the standout candidate in a strong field. His appointment follows an international search.

“Dr Lithander holds a BSc (Econ) from the London School of Economics and an MPhil and PhD from the University of Cambridge.

“His research interests lie in contemporary Latin American literature and he has a particular interest in public policy issues related to the development of higher education.

“Dr Lithander brings significant experience in international education to the position. During his time at UCD he has considerably expanded its international student enrolments, built productive international relationships and repositioned UCD as Ireland’s most internationally-engaged university.

“The appointment of Lithander is the second of three major appointments to the ANU Executive, with the appointment of Professor Marnie Hughes-Warrington as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) last month. A new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) will also be appointed next year.

“Dr Lithander will join ANU in June 2012.”
