Plymouth University graduates share their tips on going back to nature

Three resourceful graduates who took up a challenge issued by TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall to travel the British Isles and ‘live off the land’ have put pen to paper to share their experiences.

Trevor Brinkman, Thom Hunt and Tim Cresswell successfully navigated the country with no money, and relied upon foraging and hunting to survive.

Now they’ve released a book – ‘The Three Hungry Boys: How to Catch, Trap, Forage and Generally Blag your Way to Survival in the Wild’ – in which they share useful tips such as cooking with unlikely ingredients.

The adventures of three marine biologists, who met at Plymouth University on their degree course, were featured on Channel 4 in 2009, after they accepted the challenge from Fearnley-Whittingstall.

Trevor Brinkman said: “On first meeting at university, we found out we had a common interest in survival programmes and spent a few summers hanging out by the sea in Devon and Cornwall in search of our dinner. This was the inspiration behind our first challenge, and Hugh gave us the start we needed to get it off the ground.

“We have since worked with Hugh on further events around his food themed programme ‘River Cottage’ and we wanted to share more widely the skills we have picked up since our first challenge.”

‘The Hungry Boys’ will also feature in a new series with Hugh, which will be aired over four 60 minute programmes. It is set to cover a new challenge when they embark on a journey from River Cottage in Axminster to Land’s End, again with nothing but the clothes they stand in.

The first show starts at 7.00pm on Sunday 15 January 2012.
