Each year the University of Sydney hosts revue workshops for students to gain expert advice from theatre professionals.

The Seymour Centre at the University of Sydney hosts training workshops which started from Monday 12 July for three successive Mondays in order to prepare young actors and comedians for the revue season.

Tim Jones, Artistic Director and General Manager of the Seymour Centre said the workshops aimed to create exciting avenues for students.

"Seymour tries to enhance the student experience in the best way possible and these training workshops are all about providing skills to young people who are creating revues," he said.

Tim Jones, who has been at the Seymour Centre for 18 months, was the former Artistic Director/CEO of the Australian Theatre for Young People, Australia’s largest and oldest theatre company for young people, and specialised in developing and directing new work for the theatre.

"Some students involved don’t have a great deal of experience and the training including producing and directing a revue opens up doors for them," he said. "There are many examples out there such as The Chaser and Ed Kavalee, who all started out with university revues."

The workshops include directing, marketing and technical advice, and enables students to realise their artistic vision for the revues.

Tim led the directing workshop which included training students with on-stage exercises and discussing how to effectively structure revues.

"The workshop is about preparing students to create firm structures for revues and know how to work with different skills and performers.

"On-stage exercises help to confirm these skills in practice, so the directing students of the revues are well prepared."

Around twenty students representing their faculty revue team ranging from Arts to Queer attend the training sessions.

The next workshop is scheduled to be run at 5pm, Monday 26 July by Dave Williams, Senior Technician at the Seymour Centre.

Revue Season 2010 is from 9 August to 18 September and will be held at York Theatre and Downstairs Theatre at the Seymour Centre.

The Seymour Centre is the University of Sydney’s performing arts complex and comprises of two large theatres seating 800 and 600-plus a 153-seat black box space and a small music venue with seating for 120.
